CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE & MOXIBUSTION
Clinical Investigation on the Treatment of Stuffied-Chest by the Principle of Propagation of Needling Sensation along Meridians
Ma Zhuhong et al (Acupuncture Department, General Hospital of Chinese People's liberation Army, Beijing 100853)
Thirty cases of coronary heart disease were treated with the method of propagating the needling sensation toward the focus of the disease through the meridians wich was induced by the employment of sonoelectric needles. The effects determined by both clinical and ECG examinations in the patients treated with the therapy were more satisfactory than those in the control group treated with me dication (P<0.05). This treating method is able to impro venoticeably patient's left cardiac functions and the myo cardial repolarized electric potential, and reduce blood viscosity. Animal experiments showed that sonoelectric needling at neiguan (PC 6) could markedly lessen the degree of injury of ultrastructure in the acute ischemic myocardium, and enable the E C G showing myocardial ischemia to be improved. The mechanism is possibly related to systemic regulation of cardiac endocrine including cardiac sodium.

Clinical Observation on Ageing-delaying Effect of Health-Preserving Moxibustion
Wang Lingling, Wu Zhongchao, Xu (Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 210029)
The article presents clinical observations on moxibustion for heath-preserving performed on 40 aged subjects without remarkable organic illness. The result showed that the moxibustion possessd the ageing-delaying action and was noticeably effective in alleviating ageing symptoms and improving physiological functions of the body. The authors hold that over middle age, the declination of kidney qi is the chief cause for ageing and deficiency of spleen and blood stagnation are also contributory to senility. The performance of moxibustion at shenque (CV 8) and zusenli (ST 36) has the effect of warming yang, replenishing qi, and activating the circulation of blood to drege collaterals and is a method for self-health-care.

Influence of Different Methods and Dosage of Moxibustion upon Whole Blood Contents of Histamine in Rabbits and Its Significance
Zhang Jingying, Liu Nongyu, Yang Zhaomin et al (Acupuncture Department, Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 210029)
In order to investigate the actions performed by different methods and dosage in moxibustion therapy, the authors observed the variation of whole blood contents of histamine in rabbits exerted by different intensity of stimulation induced by moxa sticks. The outcome of the experiments showed that intensive stimulation brought by the moxibustion with moxa sticks remarkably elevated the whole blood content of histamine in rabbits, while moxibustion by means of small moxa cones decreased noticeably the content; and mild stimulation by moxa stick or big moxa cones exerted no marked influence on the change of the content. It is suggested that methods and stimulation intensity play a vital role in moxibustion therapy.

Influence of acupuncture on Intracellular Calcium Ion Activity in Extra-Kinetic Skeletal Muscles of Rabbits
Li Pengtao, Yu Hongling, Kang Suobin et ai (Hebei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 050091)
Same breed of healthy violet rabbits were selected and divided at random in to acupuncture group, controlled group and free group. The former two underwent the repeated passive tetanic contraction of the musculus quadriceps femoris induced by electric stimulation with superficial electrodes and the effect of acupuncture was observed by means of determining the activity of intracellular calciums ions in skeletal muscles with specific ion electrodes. The results showed that acupuncture is able to reduce quickly the raised activity value of calcium ions in skeletal muscles induced by extra-kinesis. It is held thats this result is contributory to the understanding of the mechanism that acupuncture recovers the delayed muscular soreness caused by kinesis.

The Change of Cutaneous Electric Current on Acupoints under Anaesthesia for Different Operations
Li Wanyao, Hidemichi Ogawa and Zyou Yossita ( Guangzhou College of Tradicional Chinese Medicine, 510407)
In this investigation the change of cutanneous electric current (CEC) on Taichong (LR 3) and Yongquan (KI 1 ) in anaesthetized patients was observed during tympanoplasty and thyroidectomy. The quantity of CEC on both points was remarkably decreased with the anesthesia, but it became noticeably lower on KI 1 during the operation of tympanoplasty than that during (P<0.05). The quantity on Taichong (LR 3) was just oppsite during the two operations. It is considered that Yongquan (KI 1) is more closely related with the ear and taichog ( LR 3) has more intimate relations with thyroid functions. Therefore, it is concluded that acupoints are connected to some extent with specific internal and sense organs.

A preliminary Study on the Biological Origin of Meridians & Collalerals
Liu Yanming (Tianjin College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 300193)
In this article the origin of the meridian & collateral (M&C) system and the basic features of its prototype are briefly discussed. It has been found that M&C system is closely related with the longitudinal cord nervous system which still exists in platyhelminthes and Nemathelminthes. The primitive longitudinal cord nervous system, an
integral nervous system with 8 longitudinal nerve trunks, has great similarities with the features of the M&C system. The author holds that the skeleton of the M&C system is likely the conservation of the primitive longitudinal nervous system and the specific M&C phenomena, to some extent, are the manifestations of atavism. This point of view sounds reasonable in explaining various M&C phenomena.

More and more experiments prove that the selection of reinforcing or reducing according to ¨Optimum Time for Acupuncture ¨ of Ziwuliuzhu needs to be re-studied. Traditionally, reinforcing was always given when the channel Qi was vigorous, while reducing was administrated to the following two-hour period of the luxuriant channel Qi. This paper reviews its theoretical basis and related materials. Combining the new achievements of studies on acupuncture chronotherapeutics, the author puts forward a new viewpoint: Reducing should be given when the channel Qi is vigorous and reinforcing given when it is most declined, namely, 6 two-hour periods after its vigour.
